Bethany’s List

Chapter one: Bethany Makes a List

Erec was going to leave for Upper Earth tomorrow. He was sad to leave his father, and scared to leave Bethany, but he had to see his mom.

Bethany sat by the door, waiting for Jack and Melody, who were coming over for Erec’s goodbye party. In her hands was a piece of paper.

“What do you have there, Bethany?” Erec asked.

Bethany looked up at him, looking exceptionally happy, “A list!”

“A list of wha-“ Erec began but the list was shoved in his face. He had to take a step back to read it: List of Craziness.

“List of Craziness?” he asked. Bethany nodded enthusiastically. Erec smiled at her, “Can I be the first to add something to the list?” Bethany nodded again, clearly far too happy with herself.

Erec took the list away from her, and Bethany handed him a pen. He took the pen and, smiling at Bethany, wrote:

#1: Making a “crazy” list

He handed the list back to Bethany. She frowned at him, showing her disapproval, then laughed. Bethany stowed her list away and the two of them waited for their friends.

Jack and Melody arrived together. Everyone gathered in the living room to watch a movie, and eat a bunch of candy (special delivery from Jam’s magic serving trey). The movie had been a good idea. The candy… not such a good idea.

In only the first hour, the kids were so hyped up on sugar that they were in fits of giggles, laughing at things that should not be laughed at. Jam, who was forced to join the party and have some fun by Erec, was nodding off to sleep, occasionally being jolted awake by a squeal from either Bethany or Melody. Eventually, Jam was able to fall asleep in his chair and not be awoken by the kids’ loudness. King Piter had gone to bed a long time ago because he ‘needed his beauty sleep’. Pi had been right behind him, needing his own sleep. He told Erec to protect his little sister while he slept. Erec, already completely intoxicated by the overdose on sugar, quickly agreed and wrapped an arm around Bethany, who burst into a fit of giggles, shoving him in the side once then snuggling up next to him. Pi waved a hand at them, too tiered to care, and then he was off for bed-d-by-time.

“Look!” Melody squealed as the vampire on screen leaped backward out of his burning coffin, screaming in a horrid wail, “That’s too much!” She laughed her head off. Jack confiscated her jellybeans from her.

“It’s not funny!” he said, laughing himself, “You’re horrible!” But he rolled over on the couch, successfully spilling the jellybeans on the floor. Melody jumped off the couch to find a paper bag to help her stop hyperventilating. She failed in finding one, and ended up on the floor rolling with laughter. Tears came to Bethany’s eyes, she was laughing so much. When something actually funny happened in the movie, she shoved Erec away, laughing like a maniac, managing to knock him to the floor. He laughed even harder; his back now hurt, but not nearly as much as his stomach did from all the laughing.

Melody took a deep breath, which only turned into a coughing laugh. “I can’t breath… haha! Laughing too ******* much!”

“L-language, Mel!” Jack said, trying to contain his laughter and failing. Melody banged her fits on the floor in fits of giggles, tears streaming down her face. Bethany was holding her stomach, she was laughing so hard.

Finally, the movie faded to black and the credits scrolled up the screen. Yet they still had a pile of candy in front of them, and none of them knew what to do with it. Eat it? No, they would most certainly get a stomach ache. Bethany and Erec already felt like they were going to be sick.

It was Melody who came up with the solution. She grabbed a can of whipped cream and squirted Bethany on the nose.

“WHIPPED CREAM FIGHT!” she shouted at the top of her lungs. Jam snorted in his sleep, only slightly disturbed by the yelling. Bethany and Erec were quick to agree and grabbed a can of whipped cream each. Jack joined in pretty quickly, grabbing a chocolate whipped cream can.

           And so the war began.

Erec hid behind the couch, searching for his prey. There she was – the ‘curly haired Melodactal’. The ‘rarest of all dinosaurs’.

Melody rushed past, trying to reach the kitchen. Erec sprang. Melody stopped like a deer in the headlights, and screamed in mock fear. She sprayed Erec in the chest with her can of whipped cream, and he got her in the hair. Erec ducked away from Melody, trying to get a good shot of her nose. That’s when Jack leaped into the fray, nailing both Erec and Melody in the ear.

“That deserves extra points!” Melody said, scooping the chocolate cream out of her ear.

“There are no points, though,” Jack said, ducking away from Erec, who decided that Jack deserved to have whipped cream in his ear, too.

“If there were points,” Melody said, getting back into the game, “that would be extra!”

Melody jumped at Jack like a leaping lizard, whipped cream can held high. Jack ran away from her, and she chased his, letting out a war cry. Erec began to follow, when he spotted a blur of brown hair in the kitchen. He grinned, changing targets.

“Here, Bethany, Bethany….” He said, playfully, entering the kitchen. Bethany squealed with the delight of being caught, and ran away from him. Erec chased after her, grabbing her wrist. Bethany spun around, giggling, and squirted Erec in the mouth with the white cream. Erec spluttered, releasing Bethany. Bethany twirled away from him, laughing. Erec swallowed the whipped cream, and tracked her with every intention of getting whipped cream in her hair. Melody hounded Jack into the kitchen just as Bethany and Erec slipped out of it. Jack slid under the kitchen table for protection. Melody was right after him, and Jack discovered that melody, being a tiny girl and him being a growing boy, was much more agile that he was. He tried to back out from under the table, but Melody was quickly able to pin him down, since he didn’t have much room to move. Jack groaned, staring up at the smirking female.

“Just do it….” He grumbled. Melody’s smirk became an all out evil grin and she drew a lightning bolt on his forehead with the cream.

“Why, don’t you look stunning, Harry,” Melody joked.

In the next room, Bethany had cornered Erec.

“Any last words, Erec?” Bethany asked, grinning.

“Back!” Erec said, laughing, pointing his whipped cream can at her, “Back I say!”

“Mmmmm….” Bethany said, looking like she was thinking, “No, I don’t think so.”

She sprayed him in the chest. Erec clutched his chest theatrically.

“I’m hit!” he said, as if he wasn’t already covered in the white goop, “I’m hit! Life… ending… getting… dark!” He grinned at Bethany.

“Ah!” Bethany squealed as he sprayed her in her hair, showering it in dewdrops of cream. Bethany backed up, slipping on a puddle of whipped cream. She screamed, pulling Erec down with her. Erec yelped, falling.

The two of them hit the ground, just as Jack had escaped from Melody, who had been having too much fun drawing pictures on his forehead (she’d just finished drawing a smiley face, this time). Jack ran into the living room, and slipped on another puddle of whipped cream, sliding into Erec and Bethany in a tangle of arms and legs. Melody followed right after him, but stopped to stare instead of slipping.

“Well, looks like I’m missing out on all the fun….” She said, backing up.

“No, Melody!” the trio yelped, trying to pry themselves away from each other. They ultimately failed because it was too hard to figure out whose legs were whose.

“Ouch! Erec, that’s my leg! Not Jack’s! Don’t bend it that way!”

“Ow, ow, ow…. Bethany! That’s my arm! Not Erec’s!”

“Cannon ball!” Melody yelled running into a slide. She bumped into the coffee table, sending a shower of jellybeans and skittles into the air and slammed into the trio.

“Ow!” Melody laughed as the candy rained upon them.

“Melody!” Jack, Bethany, and Erec all yelled, now completely bewildered as to whose limbs belong to who. Melody sent up a rainbow of whipped cream, which ended up hitting Jack in the face. He retaliated by squirting what he thought was her hand with the chocolate whipped cream bottle (since it was all he could reach; his arm was pinned under… someone’s leg) but it turned out to e Bethany’s.

“HEY!” Bethany shrieked, rather happily, “If my arms weren’t pinned down, I’d squirt you back!” She kicked Erec in the cheek. “Get him back, for me.”

Erec squirted Bethany instead. Melody got Erec in the nose, retaliating for Bethany. Jack shrugged his shoulders the best he could, and squirted Bethany’s hand again. Bethany scoffed and kicked Erec’s cheek again. Erec and Melody both aimed a shower of whipped cream and Jack; Erec nailed him just below the eye, but Melody missed and hit Bethany in the shoulder.

It continued like that for a good long time. Bethany was the first to nod off to sleep. She had closed her eyes to protect them, because her only retaliation would be to kick Erec in the face. Jack fell asleep not long after that. Melody and Erec continued the battle for a long while until Erec began to feel sleepy and stopped retaliating. Within five minutes, the quartet had fallen into a deep slumber.

Jam had woken up that morning to find the room covered in whipped cream, jellybeans, and skittles. He stood up, popping his back.

“Well,” he said, happily, “I’ve got my work cut out for me!” Then he noticed the four kids asleep on the floor in a jumbled mess. Melody quietly snored, pinning Bethany’s left arm and leg underneath her, and her leg trapped Erec’s right hand. Prince Erec’s right leg trapped Jack’s left arm and was trapped under Bethany’s left arm. Jack’s back trapped Bethany’s other arm and his own arm seemed to be stuck under her. Prince Erec’s leg trapped Jack’s foot. Surprisingly, they all seemed pretty comfortable, sleeping like babies (the kind that sleep, not the kind that wail all night long).

Jam smiled, sighing. He sauntered over to the sleeping children and began to untangle them. Melody was the easiest to untangle. Erec was untangled next, and Jack and Bethany were pretty easy to untangle after that. Jam carried Bethany and Melody to Bethany’s room, and Jack and Erec to Erec’s room. Then he set to work on cleaning the house.

“That was fun,” Melody said through a mouth full of toothpaste. When they woke up, Jam had suggested a good brushing, and King Piter insisted upon it for Bethany and Erec. Erec spit into the sink, all too aware of his father smirking at them from the other room, making sure they brushed. Pi hadn’t woken up yet.

“A’ wa’ inthane!” Jack said, gargling mouthwash.

“What?” Bethany asked, pausing in her tooth brushing.

Jack spit into the sink, “That was insane.”

Erec took a paper cup and filled it with water. “I think I’m going to be sick,” he said, chugging the water.

Melody spit into the sink, “It was fun, though….”

They all nodded in agreement. Erec got a towel and blotted his face, scrubbing the whipped cream off. Jack took it away from him and rubbed his own face.

Melody gripped her dark, curly hair, “I need a bath.”

“We have a shower,” King Piter said, smiling.

“Out, boys!” Melody said, grabbing Jack by the back of his shirt and tossing him out of the bathroom. Erec followed.

“I get it after you!” Bethany said, glancing up at her own hair, glistening with whipped cream. She joined the boys outside the bathroom and Melody started up the shower.

“That was crazy,” Jack said, rubbing at a spot on his shirt that was damp with cream, “I think I’m going to need a bath.”

“I’ll fourth that notion,” Erec said, running a hand through his now very damp hair.

But Bethany was smiling. Erec, Jack, Jam, and King Piter all looked at her, wondering what the heck she was so happy about. A sweet sound came from the bathroom, like a beautiful instrument – Melody’s gift. Was that what Bethany was so happy about?

But no, Erec knew exactly what she was smiling about when she pulling a little piece of paper out from her pocket.

“No….” Erec said, and Bethany wrote of the List of Craziness.

#2: Having a Whipped Cream Fight

End Chapter Note: Thank you all for reading! This was fun to write. I was having trouble coming up with a first chapter, but I think I came up with something fairly crazy. Food fights are crazy, aren’t they? They’re fun, but then you’re all messy and the place is a mess. Then you slip and hurt yourself and get all tangled up together with everyone else…. You may be thinking “why a whipped cream fight?” …because is sounded incredibly fun. I hope you enjoyed this chapter and please stay tuned for Chapter Two: Love is Pink.

Chapter 2: Love is Pink

Jack Hare was bored. Bored out of his mind. So bored, he thought he might go insane from boredom.

Jack Hare had four friends: Oscar, Erec, Bethany, and Melody. Oscar was never around anymore. Erec was in Upper Earth, visiting his family. Bethany was with her brother. And Melody was on vacation with her parents. Jack was all by himself.

But he wasn’t completely alone. He still had animal friends. But right now, most of the birds were flying high in the sky, the dogs were playing with their masters, and the squirrels… they don’t like people. Jack sighed, leaning back on the park bench.

Why the long face, Jack Hare? Jack jumped and whirled around. Cutie Pie, Bethany’s cat, hoped up onto the bench. Her pink tail wrapped itself around his arm.

“Hi, Cutie Pie,” Jack said, smiling, “I’m just kind of bored.”

Want to talk to me? Cutie Pie suggested. Jack thought about it and decided that would be a safe activity.

“I miss my friends,” Jack confided in her, “I hardly get to see any of them, anymore. It didn’t really matter that Erec was gone a lot before, because I always had Oscar. But now Oscar’s not around a lot. He’s all jumpy when I do find him. He’s cutting himself off from everyone. And so, now I only have Bethany and Melody when Erec’s not here, and… well… they’re girls.”

What’s wrong with being a girl? Cutie Pie asked. Jack frowned.

“Nothing, really, but they like to talk about girl things when they’re together. I want to talk about guy things, sometimes… okay, so I never want to talk about ‘girl things’, but you get the point.”

Not really. What is the difference between ‘girl things’ and ‘guy things’?

“You know… hair, boys, make-up… those are girl things. I don’t want to talk about that kind of stuff.”

Boys do not talk about boys? I don’t understand.

“That talk about how cute boys are,” Jack said, making a face, “Guys… don’t talk about how ‘cute’ other guys are.”

Cutie Pie looked confused. Then she purred. Oh, you mean talking about love.

        Jack blushed.

Cutie Pie nuzzled his hand. Bethany talks about ‘boys’ a lot more when you’re not there.

“I assume so, as I beg them to stop when I am around.”

They talk about a lot of love things, her and Melody and their other friend Darla….Who loves who, old ‘crushes’, kissing…. Have you ever kissed anyone, Jack? It sounds interesting.

“No, I haven’t. Can we not talk about this? What did I just say about not wanting to talk about ‘girl stuff’?”

          Fine.

For the next few days, Jack and Cutie Pie would hang out while Melody and Bethany were away. On Saturday, when Melody and Bethany came back from their trips, they invited Jack and their friend Darla Will to a sleepover. Jack was happy to have his regular friends back, though he’d still be happier when Erec comes back.

“That was fun!” Bethany laughed as they crawled off the roof, back into her bedroom. They’d been singing at the top of their lungs on the roof. They had to stop when King Piter called up to them from the garden that they were scaring the plants. Plus, Darla’s throat was very fragile, because she’d just gotten over a cold.

“What should we play next?” Melody asked, jumping up and down on Bethany’s bed.

        “Human Knot?” Bethany suggested.

“Not enough people,” Melody pointed out.

         “Charades?” Jack asked.

“No,” all three girls said, making faces.

The door opened a bit and Pi poked his head in. “Just checking on you guys.” Cutie Pie darted into the room between his legs. She hoped up on the bed as Pi closed the door.

        “Cutie Pie!” Bethany gushed.

“Truth or Dare?” Darla suggested. Jack groaned, but Bethany and Melody lit up.

“Yeah! Truth or Dare!” The girls sat in a circle and forced Jack to join them.

“You first, Darla, since you suggested it,” Bethany said.

“…Dare,” Darla said, biting her lip.

Bethany thought for a minute, “Drink a jar of pickle juice.”

Darla groaned and Melody said “Eeeeew!”

“I like pickles….” Bethany said, looking offended.

“Have you ever drunk pickle juice though?” Melody asked.

         “No.”

“I think Bethany should do it,” Jack said, grinning, “Darla just got over a cold.”

“Fine, I’ll do it.” Bethany ran to the kitchen and brought back a jar of pickles. She twisted off the top and began drinking straight from the jar.

“Oh, Bethany!” Darla said in horror, “That’ll make you so sick!”

“Hmm?” Bethany asked, “I feel fine.”

         “For now,” Melody said ominously.

       “Darla, pick your victim!”

         “Um… Melody.”

         “Dare!” Melody grinned.

Darla thought about it, “Impromptu concert with your toes only.”

“That’s easy!” Melody said, kicking off her shoes. She rubbed her toes back and forth, creating beautiful music. It sounded strangely like “Happy Birthday”.

        “Bethany! Truth or Dare!”

“I just did one for Darla!” Bethany said, rubbing her stomach, looking like the regretted drinking the pickle juice.

“No backing out! Truth or dare?”

        “Truth.”

Melody grinned. “Have you ever kissed anyone?”

Bethany turned scarlet. The girls squealed with delight, obviously getting something that Jack missed.

“I’m so happy for you, Bethany!” Melody shrieked. Darla smile at her friend.

“Yes….” Bethany said, grinning. Jack raised an eye brow, and got up to leave, but Bethany and Melody pulled him back into the circle.

         “Who?” Melody asked Bethany.

“Was not part of the dare,” Bethany grinned. Melody looked like Bethany had just slapped her. “Jack, truth or dare?”

“Truth,” Jack grumbled. Why couldn’t they respect the fact that he was a guy?

Bethany grinned evilly, “Are you in love with my cat?”

Jack choked on his own spit. “Am I what?!”

“Well, you’ve been spending so much time with her….” Bethany grinned. Melody laughed, and even Darla had to giggle. Jack’s jaw dropped in horror at the mere idea.

         “No!” he said.

“Looks like someone’s in denial….” Bethany joked.

“I’m not in love with your cat!”

         “How cute!” Melody said.

        “I’m not! That’s gross!”

For the next hour, they continued their game of Truth or Dare… and insisted that Jack was in love with Cutie Pie. As much as they (and Cutie Pie) found this funny, Jack was indignant.

“Come on, Jackie!” Melody said, grinning, “We think it’s cute~!” He knew they were only joking… but…

“I’m not! In love! With her cat!”

         “Prove it,” Bethany said, grinning.

“Prove it? Why should I have to prove it? She’s a cat!”

Melody patted him on the back. “Prove it,” she said. None of the girls actually expected him to ‘prove it’. It was all a joke.

           “Fine! I will!”

Melody blinked. Jack whirled around, grabbed her by the waist, and planted a kiss on her lips. Bethany’s and Darla’s jaws dropped.

When Jack pulled away from Melody and let go of her, she was so shocked, she fell to the floor.

“See?” Jack said, “I’m not in love with your cat!”

Nobody moved. Jack blinked once. Then twice, as what he just did sunk in. He looked at Cutie Pie, who was purring on the bed.

Nice way to get to first base, Jackie.

Jack turned bright red. Then, he noticed Bethany getting to her feet and turned pale.

          “Bethany… what are you…?”

Bethany grabbed a piece of paper off her desk and wrote something on it.

#3: Giving up your first kiss to prove a point.

Jack wouldn’t speak to any of them for a week.

End Chapter Note: Uuuuuuum… yeah. So… It didn’t come out as good as I’d hoped, but… it’s fine. I hope they weren’t OOC. Next Chapter: Book Obsession.
